Double Signature. A dialogue between design and artisanal excellence

Mario Trimarchi
Massimo Lunardon

Designer and architect Mario Trimarchi was born in Messina, but in the Eighties he moved to Milan where he lives and works. He designs as a means of understanding the poetic spirit of objects. “Design is a naive way to feel a bit closer to the mystery of beauty,” he declares. He believes in design as a means of fostering poetry in the world of things. The Director of the Master in Design at the Domus Academy from 1990 to 1993, he was a member of the Olivetti Design Studio. In 1999 he founded FRAGILE, a corporate identity studio. In 2016, he won the Golden Compass with his Ossidiana coffee pot for Alessi. He has never stopped conducting his sculptural experimentation with objects, creating Oggetti Smarriti, Strawberry Fields Forever and Close to the Edge, a self-produced pieces under the MT Artworks brand. In 2022 he received the Targa d'Oro award from the UID (the Italian Drawing Union). Formerly a lecturer in Corporate Identity at Genova University’s Architecture Faculty, he currently teaches Brand Design at Naba, Product Design at Abadir and Design Thinking at the Iulm. Mario Trimarchi’s creative process aims to strike a balance by creating unstable shapes, objects in movement that defy functionalist symmetries.

Massimo Lunardon, a master and artist of handblown glass, first embarked on his career in 1988, after working in an atelier and various workshops and studios of artists, designers and architects. He investigates materials as a means of taking their sculptural potential beyond ordinary boundaries with a spirit of experimental research. His business was established in 1996 in a former dairy: it involved undertaking a form of industrial archaeology, with restoration work only involving minimal structural interventions to ensure it still respected the building’s spirit. From the very outset, it was a container for creative individuals, whether already formed or in formative phase: architects, artists, designers and students all found their physical space here, along with the open-minded approach needed to experiment with their ideas. Lunardon has worked with big-name designers both in Italy and abroad, from Hayon to Gamper, Branzi, De Lucchi, Newson, Nigel Coates, Trimarchi and Formafantasma. All his works are made in the atelier in San Giorgio di Perlena, in the province of Vicenza.
