Beautiful, meaningful, powerful
And, if possible, beautiful. This ongoing game of cross-references between materials and forms, between concepts and functions, between techniques and territories, is just one of the aspects encompassed by the word “playful”, which has been chosen as the common thread of this seventh edition of Doppia Firma.
A keenly-awaited event during the Milan Design Week, and one viewed internationally as an effective means of matching creative energies with the manufacturing potential that only talented craftspeople possess, this year Doppia Firma tells stories that are imaginative, unexpected and at times irreverent: stories that are turned into new, meaningful, beautiful forms which spring from the imagination of the 24 selected designers.
Their ideas grow through partnerships with as many manufactures, ateliers or master artisans, who have interpreted the playful imaginings of the designers with an equally playful spirit. This does not mean they are without depth and skill, however: on the contrary, the carefully calibrated manual skills needed to create the works on show reveal the connection between hand and mind.
To quote Henri Focillon again, the hand makes the mind no less than the mind makes the hand: everything we produce with creativity, consciousness and pleasure is not only beautiful, but also significant. And therefore memorable.
Doppia Firma places playful but significant works in the spotlight. Whether decorative or functional, they are specially-executed works which are often inspired by Palazzo Litta (the aristocratic palace which houses the exhibition), exhibited alongside existing pieces crafted in keeping with the spirit of dialogue we have always fostered. They have been picked from the productions of designers and artisans that not only believe in the power of handmade beauty, but that actually have fun creating it.
From Pakistan to Colombia, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, the Czech Republic and Italy: playfulness, expressed through forms of contemporary design handcrafted by skilled artisans, knows no borders but those of the mind. And as Focillon himself reminds us, the human mind is dynamic: it always leads us forward, towards a future where the real talent of the Homo Faber provides, and will continue to provide, a competitive edge, an employment opportunity, and above all the unit for measuring happiness.
