The Double Signature of Homo Faber
This creativity and awareness come to life in the dialogue that these twelve designers—apostles of style—have established with twelve master artisans, each representing the cultural and productive heritage of Italian cities that are now entering a new season of exceptional craftsmanship. Working by hand is not, in itself, a guarantee of quality. Manual skill must be accompanied by aesthetic sensitivity, an instinct for change, the ability to interpret a design, the authenticity of a deep-rooted connection to place, and the clear expression of an identity capable of becoming a true competitive strength. These are the qualities of the true master artisan, who stands at the centre both of the world of production and culture. As Vincenzo Vitiello writes, our very identity is shaped by the network of relationships we inevitably form with others. It is precisely in this dynamic and fruitful exchange with the outside world—an exchange that continually reshapes and renews both ourselves and the world around us—that culture resides. First and foremost, a culture of respect: a respect born of curiosity and knowledge. A culture of beauty: not simply the pursuit of aesthetics, but the expression of a method grounded in moral rigour. And finally, a culture of dialogue: for in times of emphatic declarations and fragile certainties, dialogue—as Plato reminds us—remains the most fitting and fertile means of transforming an idea into a project, and a project into an object that bears the enduring signature of homo faber. Indeed, a double signature. For homo faber is also the one who, starting from a material or conceptual intuition, is able to generate new ideas, new objects and new desires. Two identities that meet and complete one another, for they are simply two expressions of the same origin, the same heritage and the same hope: one that is truly and profoundly human. A hope that will travel from Milan to Venice, celebrating Homo Faber once again with the fourth edition of the biennial event which, from September 1 to 30, showcases the skill, craftsmanship and design creativity of talents from around the world.
